DAY 2 - Kiev
After breakfast at the hotel you will have morning half-day excursion to
Pecherska Lavra (Monastery of the Caves), an active monastery founded in the 11th c. and centre of Christianity for Kyivan-Rus. Its complex of churches reflects a unique Ukrainian baroque style which is only surpassed by the beauty of the newly reconstructed
Uspenskyj Cathedral (1998), destroyed by Soviet mines in 1941. The labyrinths of the "near" and "far" caves hold over 115 burial niches containing remains of St. Antoniy, Nestor the Chronicler, and many religious and political leaders. World-renowned Scythian Gold treasures are exhibited within its walls. The Kyiv Pechersk Lavra is included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. After delicious lunch at local restaurant you will have a tour to
St. Sophia Cathedral and Monastery Complex, a real pearl of the world architecture. St. Sophia's thirteen gorgeous golden domes nicely blend with the city skyline. The grandiose ensemble was built by Prince Yaroslav the Wise in the XI century in commemoration of the victory over the Pecheneg tribe. The cathedral became a major cultural and political centre of Kyivan Rus and a site for receiving ambassadors from many countries. Inside, you will view the largest frescoes and mosaics collection in the world.Further on you will move to
St.Andrew’s Church, the Ukrainian Baroque church designed in 1754 by the Italian architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli. It is decorated and in applied ornament and timber fretwork. The interior represents sculpture and paintings of famous masters. The slender curves of its blue, white, gold and green exterior stand out against the skyline, perched up above the
Podil district at the crest of the historic
Upper Town, at the supposed site where the Apostle Andrew erected a cross. Its richly decorated interior features a three-tiered iconostasis and several paintings from the 18
th century. Evening dinner.
DAY 3 - Kiev
After breakfast at the hotel you are invited to the
Ukrainian Museum of Folk Architecture and Rural Life in Pirogovo. Spread out over scenic rolling hills dotted with groves of trees are a large number of 17
th to 20
th century wooden cottages, churches, farmsteads and windmills, many of them with manufactured flower and vegetable gardens and interiors furnished with fascinated old textiles, traditional furniture and tools. The museum is divided into seven small villages representing the regional areas of Podolia, Carpathia, Polesia, Poltava, Southern Ukraine, Sloboda Ukraine and the Central Dnipro River Valley
After delicious lunch at one of the national restaurants in Pirogovo you will be transferred back to Kiev where you will have some free time for shopping or revisiting one of Kyiv’s many museums. Our advice is to visit
Andriyivskyy Uzviz, the most ancient and steep street in Kiev, which is Kyivites' favorite place for outdoor fairs, festivals, and concerts.
